Deep Dive - DCEU: Suicide Squad

We polled our entire team and ranked every DCEU film across six categories. We weighted each category based on their overall value to the success of the movie.

Synopsis: A secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.

Analysis: The trailer for Suicide Squad created a ton of buzz based on the characters in it and the style. Even the beginning of the movie showed potential, but the story ended up being a mess and even boring. The reason Amanda Waller put the team together and the mission itself left a lot to be desired. Let's also not forget that a major part of Waller's plan had a prerequisite of Flag needing to instantly fall in love with an archaeologist who he just met.

 Grade: 2.5/10

Analysis: We got the most background for Deadshot, but even then, there wasn't a huge transformation for him or any character. They did what they had to to save the world and got a little time off their sentences, plus a few perks. Not much to see here.
 

Grade: 3/10

Name: Enchantress

Bio: Enchantress was an ancient and inter-dimensional mystical being, who possessed the body of June Moon. Initially under Amanda Waller's control, Enchantress was viewed as one of the candidates for Task Force X membership, but she escaped, freeing her brother Incubus and attempted to take over Earth with their combined mystical powers.
 

Evil Plan: Convince a careless archaeologist to free her from her prison, free her brother from a similar prison, grow their power to what it once was, raise an army, and take over the world.

Analysis: This witch is only around because someone happened to stumble upon her resting place and Amanda Waller tried to control her. Once truly free, she goes straight to basic taking over the world/end of days/villain 101 stuff. The cherry on top of this hot garbage sundae of a movie.

Analysis: This ensemble was a big reason why there was a great amount of hype going into Suicide Squad and the blame for its failure certainly doesn't fall on them (well, except maybe Jared Leto). The fact that some of these characters will continue on in the DCEU and the next "The Suicide Squad" movie proves they were onto something here with the casting.

Grade: 7/10

Best Fight:

Analysis: There are a few fun moments of this team fighting alongside each other against Enchantress' army of the Eyes of the Adversary, but the final fight with Enchantress and her brother did not garner much interest. It's easy to fall asleep during this movie (and we have).
 

Grade: 4.5/10

Analysis: They really got us with those character intros, cool graphics, and Ballroom Blitz. Knowing Batman would show up got us excited as well, and at least that scene with Deadshot and his daughter brought a tiny bit of emotion into this movie.

Grade: 5/10
 

Analysis: Notice how all of those best scenes are in the beginning? After that is the point where we fall asleep every time. It is a fascinating case study for a movie to be so anticipated and put out a great looking trailer with a strong cast, but then to go through the drama of reshoots and having the final product fall on its face. This film did not restore any faith in the DCEU.

Grade: 3.5/10
